Congratulations to all participants of the 2026 HURT 100-mile Endurance Trail Run!
The 2026 HURT100 was a phenomenal success. We had cool temperatures, fantastic trail conditions, engaged and energized runners and crews, and an incredible support system from over 300 volunteers. We applaud everyone who made it to the bridge at Makiki on Saturday morning and went on to forge their own special HURT journey on the Honolulu Mauka Trail System.
Highlights from the HURT100’s 26th year:
Course Change & Trail Clean-up:
Months before the event, a landslide rendered a portion of the Mānoa Cliff Trail impassable. The trail would not be repaired in time, requiring a rerouting of the course. A bypass of the section shortened each of the five loops by half a mile, so the solution was to add a 2.5-mile “lower loop”. This meant adding another climb up the infamous Maunalaha Trail (“Hogsback”) and an additional ankle-twisting descent down Kanealole Trail (“Pipes”). So far, no runners have officially complained about having to do Hogsback six times!
With big storms in the month before the race, HURT volunteers teamed up with the expert staff of Nā Ala Hele, the State of Hawaiʻi Trail and Access Program, to clear dozens of downed trees and recover washed-out trails. Hundreds of work hours were completed. MAHALO to all who worked hard out there to prepare the trails!
Cool Stats and Race Results:

- Runners at the start line represented 30 U.S. states and two other countries: Japan and Canada.

New HURT100 Song:
Banquet attendees were treated to a catchy, homegrown production that captures imagery and the spirit of this gritty race. We think it will go viral! The song is written and performed by Steve Villiger; and filmed, directed and produced by Caden Koehl on the HURT100 course. Share with family and friends, and enjoy:

The top three runners in each category received an original award, Koa Daggers, designed and created by one of our own HURT ʻOhana, Rex Vlcek.
The ancient Hawaiians believed all trees had spiritual significance. The Koa tree, specifically, was considered sacred and used in religious ceremonies, to build canoes, and to fashion weapons. The wood was believed to carry the mana, the spiritual energy, of the land and its people.
“We Wouldn’t Want it to be Easy” Award
This perpetual award honors the late John “Big John” Salmonson. Big John always loved to hear and tell stories of runners who struggled greatly while trying to run the HURT100, then did whatever was necessary to finish the race. The award is meant to honor heroic efforts and dogged tenacity that get the runner to the finish line (and that also tell a great and inspiring story).
This year, a hand-crafted koa bowl with an engraved, “We Wouldn’t Want it to be Easy” was presented to Hidenori Muramatsu for his perseverance and determination. Hidenori started out pretty fast, running his first two loops in 5:16 and 5:12. Then the HURT course started to catch up with him and he was slowing down. His 4th loop was 10 hours and 23 minutes. This was the slowest loop of any finisher and the third slowest loop of everyone. He was in very real danger of not finishing. On the final loop, Hidenori teamed up with fellow Japanese runners Nobuhiro Kondo and Shogo Matsuoka and ran an 8 hour 2 minute final loop to finish with 24 minutes to spare. This is really not making it easy, and Hidenori, Nobuhiro and Shogo received what was probably the biggest welcome at the finish of any we saw.
Five-time Finish Award
This award, sponsored by Alex and Christine Papadopoulos, honors the brave and daring runners who have come back to the HURT100 time and again to accumulate finishes. Only a few in the world have completed HURT five or more times.
The five-time-finisher award commemorates one of our late ʻOhana, Sylvia Ravaglia, who finished the HURT100 five times. This year, big congratulations go to:
- Denise Bourassa
- Sergio Florian
- Tracy Garneau
- Takeshi Yamada
- Aneta Zeppettella
- And a special 5-year award to Tomokazu Ihara. Tomo completed his 8th HURT100, but hasn’t been back since 2020, before the award was given.

The HURT100 media team is magic! They spend hundreds of hours running around on the course, at the finish line and in aid stations capturing your best moments – and then editing thousands of photos. Thank you to Brent, Kalani, Orlando, Nelson and Mike for all the amazing shots out there. Kudos also to the social media team of Sandi and Myra, who kept families and friends updated on the latest happenings on course.
